What are the Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing?

You probably already know that regular brushing and flossing are super important for keeping your mouth healthy. But sometimes, even with great oral care at home, plaque and tartar can build up below the gumline. This buildup can lead to gum disease, and that's where scaling and root planing come in.

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Think of scaling and root planing as a super deep cleaning for your teeth and gums. It's a special cleaning technique used by dentists and dental hygienists to remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline.

•  Scaling is like scraping away all the hard, crusty tartar and sticky plaque from the surfaces of your teeth and especially from the pockets that form between your teeth and gums. Special tools are used to get into those hard-to-reach spots.
•  Root planing is like smoothing out the rough spots on the roots of your teeth. These rough spots make it easier for plaque and tartar to stick, so smoothing them helps prevent future buildup.

Why is it Important?

Plaque and tartar are full of bacteria. When they build up below the gumline, they can irritate and inflame your gums. This inflammation is called gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. If gingivitis isn't treated, it can progress to periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease that can damage the bone and tissues that support your teeth. Eventually, this can lead to tooth loss.

Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing

So, what are the benefits of this deep cleaning?

•  Treats Gum Disease: The biggest benefit is that it helps to treat and even reverse the effects of gum disease. By removing the bacteria-filled plaque and tartar, it allows your gums to heal.
•  Prevents Tooth Loss: By stopping the progression of gum disease, scaling and root planing can help you keep your teeth for longer.
•  Fresher Breath: Plaque and tartar contribute to bad breath. Removing them can significantly improve your breath.
•  Improved Overall Health: Research has shown a link between gum disease and other health problems, like heart disease and diabetes. By keeping your gums healthy, you may also be improving your overall health. Scientists are still trying to understand exactly how gum disease affects the rest of the body, but taking care of your gums is a good idea.
•  Healthier Gums: After scaling and root planing, you'll likely notice that your gums are less red, swollen, and tender. They'll be healthier and stronger, ready to protect your teeth.

What to Expect

The procedure is usually done with local anesthetic to numb your gums so you won't feel any pain. The dentist or hygienist will carefully clean each tooth and root surface. Depending on how severe your gum disease is, you might need to have the procedure done in one or more appointments.

After the procedure, your gums might be a little sore for a few days. Your dentist or hygienist will give you instructions on how to care for your mouth during this time, which may include using a special mouthwash or taking pain medication.

Scaling and root planing is a valuable treatment for maintaining good oral health and preventing serious problems down the road. By getting this deep cleaning when you need it, you can help keep your teeth and gums healthy for years to come.
